Preparing for Change: Climate Risk Analysis in the Games Industry

A couple of newsletters ago, I wrote about CDProjektRED's latest ESG report, with its highly detailed and illuminating analysis of the studio's understanding of its exposure to physical climate risks across different time horizons. Long time GTG readers will know that I've been encouraging us to think about games interface with climate risks for quite some time now (even in part of Digital Games After Climate Change), so I have been very encouraged to see this issue being taken up by more ESG teams within games.

At the Sustainable Games Alliance, our mission is to enable cost-efficient sustainability compliance and reporting and enable emission reduction across the whole games industry. CDPR's report, as well as the strategies they've identified for managing risk, will help other sustainability experts move faster and be more precise with their analysis. To share this best practice and enable the entire industry to benefit we've organised a meetup on the topic with them.

On Wednesday, 4th of June at 11am - 12pm CEST, we'll be meeting on Zoom to hear from Joanna Sienkiewicz-Kozyrska, Sustainability Reporting Expert at CD PROJEKT, about the climate risk analysis they undertook for the latest report. We will hear about the use of climate scenarios to identify physical and transition risks facing the business, what they learnt about CDPR’s climate risk, and what they’re doing already to minimise those potential impacts.

After Joanna's presentation, Ieva Kovarskyte, the Legal Director at Remedy Entertainment (who have also been working to identify their climate risk exposure), along with myself, will have a conversation about evolving best practices for the games industry, and what lessons others can apply immediately.

If you can't make it in person there will be a recording. But if it's possible, I would recommend you get along because we will be taking questions from the audience. I am extremely excited for this event, I think CDPR are at the forefront of a key new risk management practice which games business can only benefit from. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are only heading in one direction, and the physical science is extremely clear – we can expect more extreme weather events, both chronic long-term changes, and powerfully acute, disruptive events.

It may feel trite, but there is some truth the old adage that "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail". Understanding the tools that exist to prepare for our new climate, and understanding the particular dynamics of the region of the world we make games in, is one way we can prepare.

So register for the event, and I'll see you online on the 4th of June.
